Fox Hide

INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHING WILD, RURAL FOXES?

NOW TAKING BOOKINGS FOR SPRING, SUMMER and AUTUMN 2025

HIDE IS CURRENTLY OPEN

Working in collaboration with Tom Way Photography I am delighted to announce that I will be running the Fox photography sessions at this excellent hide for the foreseeable future. Tom's safari tours have expanded and he is away in Africa for most of the year, so I have stepped up to run the hide again this year. Having run this hide, and guided for Tom on many occasions in the past, not to mention running my own hides, I bring a wealth of knowledge gained through over twenty five years of observing and photographing wildlife, which I hope will help contribute to a successful Fox photography experience.

The hide itself is well established and set on private land in South Buckinghamshire in its own meadow. The hide has been sunken into the ground to allow photographers the ability to photograph these stunning mammals at their level, whilst being seated comfortably in this large and spacious four person hide. Each seating position has one-way tinted glass allowing you see what is going on in the meadow, without the Foxes being able to see into the hide, it also has it's own port with a camouflaged lens snoot to shoot through. As there is only one port per position it is not possible to run two cameras at the same time.
Each position also has its own sturdy shelf, so Tripods are not necessary for this hide, as my custom made hide plates are provided for you to use - please note you will need to bring along your preferred gimbal, ball or equivalent tripod head along with a compatible lens foot plate (usually the Arca Swiss type) with you too, although, I do have a couple of spare gimbal heads available in the hide just in case. High quality beanbags are also provided if you would prefer to use them instead.
New for this year is the addition of a chemical toilet cubicle attached to the side of the hide for your comfort too.

For the early Spring Fox photography sessions (early March - end of April) we meet at 8am and go through until dusk.

For the early Summer, when the clocks go forward and into the Autumn Fox photography sessions (Early May - end of October) we will meet at 2pm and go through until dusk.

At the end of October when the clocks change back, we will then switch back to providing Winter Fox Photography sessions.

The number one question we are always asked is when is the best time to photograph the Fox cubs, and in our experience that is usually late May onwards, providing of course the Foxes have bred and any cubs are comfortable in visiting the meadow.
The last two years for example 2023 & 2024, we had around four young Foxes showing well from early to mid June onwards, but obviously this is very difficult to predict.

Equipment wise, to get the best out of this hide, you will need a DSLR or Mirrorless camera, either with a full frame or crop sensor and any lens in the 400mm-600mm focal length range, ideally with a fast maximum aperture of F2.8 or F4.
I personally use a Canon full frame mirrorless camera with a Canon 600mm F4L IS MK2 or a Canon 200-400mm F4L with built in 1.4x extender
Zoom lenses like a Canon 100-500, Nikon 200-500, Nikon 180-600, Sony 200-600 and the Olympus equivalent will also be perfect too and gives great flexibility. A 300mm F2.8 plus a 1.4x extender is also a god combination for this hide.
Don't forget spare fully charged batteries and spare memory cards, plus, it is also worth bringing a 1.4X teleconverter along if you have one too. Please note this hide is not suitable for compact or bridge cameras.

LENS HIRE

For Canon users, I am also able to provide the choice of a couple of telephoto lenses to hire for your session at a reasonable extra cost. Please check the availability for this service at the time of your enquiry.

Lenses available to hire are :-

Canon 600mm F4L IS mkII for getting a little closer. £70 per session

Canon 200-400mm F4L IS with built in 1.4x extender to give you maximum flexibility. £70 per session.

Not only do we see several different Foxes coming into the meadow, we also get some terrific opportunities to photograph other species too. Over the last few years Red Kites and Buzzard have become a fantastic addition to the wildlife that visit the hide, and are great to photograph at ground level as they search for scraps, very often they will defend anything they find vigorously.
Also, very occasionally, there is a family group of Roe Deer that pass through the meadow along with Green Woodpecker, other more common bird species have been photographed well here too.

Please remember, you will be photographing rural Foxes which are more wary than their urban cousins, along with wary birds of prey, so they require PATIENCE and very good, DISCIPLINED HIDE CRAFT to achieve the best results.
Both Tom and I have worked hard to provide a working hide for photographers and we hope that you have a great time photographing the wildlife here, and leave with some memorable images, but please accept that, these are wild animals and birds, they do not appear on demand, and there are absolutely no guarantees.

Cost for the hide has been kept the same as last year at £150 per person with a maximum of four photographers in the hide on any session plus myself as your guide, and although this is not a full on tuition session, I will be on hand to help with your photography as much or as little as required. All sessions begin with either an 8am or 2pm meet up depending on what time of the year you book for. This is to make the most of the Foxes most active periods of the day and also the best of the light. All sessions will end, usually by mutual agreement from all participants, around dusk or when the light has failed.
We have to be off the site by 9.30pm during the summer months at the latest due to automatic alarms and security gates at the entrance to the farm.
So, if your are interested in booking a place in this excellent hide please get in touch with me here on my contact page to arrange a booking.

Thank you for your interest in the Fox Hide and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
